Persbericht: DJ Derbastler

Met de vierde aflevering van de CTS & Scratch ’98 starten we een nieuw segment dat gewijd is aan de pioniers van de Oekraïense dansvloer.

Het is dan ook geen toeval dat de eerste gast in dit segment DJ Derbastler is. Officiële DJ van de beruchte band Gogol Bordello en een van de initiatiefnemers van de vroegste Oekraïense raves, goede vriend van CTS Records, resident van het label sinds 2007 en een vaste deelnemer aan CTS-projecten vanaf de begindagen van de Oekraïense elektronische scene. In deze speciale mix levert hij zijn kenmerkende sound.

DJ Derbastler is een bekende Oekraïense DJ, muzikant, muziekproducer, pionier van de Oekraïense club- en ravecultuur en een legende in de Oekraïense underground. Hij begon zijn muzikale carrière in minimal, noise, indie-techno, experimentele en alternatieve gitaarmuziek, evenals wereld- en etnomuziek. Hij mixte en masterde de vroegste compilaties van de Oekraïense elektronische scene, waaronder Torba Sound 95, Who is Next, SALEction 2000 en Music for Space Lorry Drivers.

Als muzikaal directeur en resident DJ was hij betrokken bij de eerste Torba Party rave-evenementen tussen 1995 en 1997 en was hij oprichter van de undergroundprojecten Yarn en Radiodelo. Daarnaast was hij lid van de indie-bands Shake Hi-Fi, Electrics en Foa Hoka. Sinds 2009 is hij actief als producer van het internationale project Mama Diaspora. Hij is medeoprichter van de indie-labels Torba Tapes, Sale! Records, Thermos Records, Ritmika Records en Extra-Estrada Records.

Sinds 1995 heeft DJ Derbastler ook soundtracks gecomponeerd voor Oekraïense modeontwerpers. Hij nam deel aan internationale hedendaagse kunstforums zoals de Biënnale van Venetië, Manifesta 5, het Palais des Festivals in Cannes, de Academie voor Schone Kunsten in Wenen, het Soros Center for Contemporary Art in Kyiv, het Goethe-Instituut, het Nationaal Museum van Oekraïense Kunst en het Pinchuk Art Centre. Daarnaast trad hij op bij diverse internationale muziekfestivals in Oekraïne en speelde hij in Nederland, de VS, Duitsland, Frankrijk, Oostenrijk, Italië, Tsjechië en Polen.

Recent sloot DJ Derbastler zich aan bij Gogol Bordello tijdens hun Dada Western Tour in de VS en trad hij op bij het Eurovisie Songfestival en het UEFA Champions League side-event. Sinds februari 2022, na de grootschalige invasie van Oekraïne, bleef DJ Derbastler in Oekraïne bij zijn familie. Hij zet zijn creatieve werk en studiowerk voort, draait DJ-sets op verschillende evenementen en richtte in de zomer van 2023 in Kyiv het Museum of Ukrainian Recordings op, waar bezoekers zeldzame opnames van Oekraïense artiesten kunnen beluisteren.

DJ Derbastler

With the fourth episode of CTS & Scratch ’98 Radio Show we start a  new segment dedicated to the Ukrainian dance floor pioneers. And it's not at
all a coincidence that the first guest of the segment is DJ Derbastler. Official DJ of the infamous Gogol Bordello band and one of initiators of the earliest Ukrainian raves, good old friend of CTS Records, resident of the label since 2007 and regular participant of CTS projects from the early days of The Ukrainian electronic scene, delivers sound mixture in his best manner in this very special mix.

Well known Ukrainian DJ, musician, music producer, Ukrainian club and rave pioneer and a legend of the Ukrainian underground, started off creating music in minimal, noise, indie-techno, experimental and alternative guitar music styles, world and ethno music styles. DJ Derbastler mixed and mastered the earliest compilations of the Ukrainian electronic scene including Torba Sound 95, Who is Next, SALEction 2000, Music for Space Lorry Drivers. DJ Derbastler was a musical director and resident DJ for the first rave Torba Party events in 95 – 97, and founder of the underground projects Yarn and Radiodelo. А member of the Shake Hi-Fi, Electrics, Foa Hoka indie bands. Since 2009 has been active in producing the international project Mama Diaspora. He is the co-founder of the Torba tapes, Sale! Records, Thermos Records, Ritmika Records, and Extra-Estrada Records indie labels. Since 1995, DJ Derbastler has authored soundtracks for Ukrainian fashion designers as well. He took part in international contemporary art forums such as: the Venice Biennale, Manifesta 5, the Palais des Festivals at Cannes, at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts, at the Soros Center for Contemporary Art in Kyiv, the Goethe Institute German Cultural Center, the National Museum of Ukrainian Art and the Pinchuk Art Centre. He also took part in the various international music festivals in Ukraine, performed also in the Netherlands, USA, Germany, France, Austria, Italy, Czech Republic and Poland. Most recently DJ Derbastler joined the Gogol Bordello band in their “Dada Western tour” (USA-tour), performed at the Eurovision and UEFA Champions League side event.

Since February 2022 when the full-scale invasion started DJ Derbastler stayed in Ukraine with his family and continues his creative activities, studio work, perform DJ sets at various events and in the summer of 2023 in Kyiv he initiated the creation of a Museum of Ukrainian Recordings where visitors can listen to rare records by Ukrainian artists.
